Brisbane duo Dune Rats are preparing to drop their much-awaited second EP ‘Social Atoms’ this month and sending a callout to fans up and down the east coast to help them get the party started on their September launch tour.

Formed in late 2010, the talented duo of Danny Beus (Villians of Wilhelm) and BC Michaels (The Cairos/Comic Sans) has experienced a groundswell of support from critics, bloggers and fans alike.

Yet to blow out the candles on their first birthday cake, Dune Rats! celebrate with a select number of dates in Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Goldcoast, Toowoomba Brisbane and Byron Bay.

It’s been a hectic year, and we’re amazed and stoked at the attention we have been getting.
After releasing our debut EP we realised that Dune Rats was going to be more hectic than we originally thought. We threw ourselves into it, got a heap of awesome support slots and blog mentions, and hopefully we can repeat that success with ‘Social Atoms’,” said party-time drummer, BC Michaels.

ROSS DE CHENE HURRICANES - FRIDAY NIGHT!!!

"Ross de Chene Hurricanes are two punks from Melbourne, who were brought together through a mutual love of Tony Modra and his radical speccies. Justin thumps the jungle drum while Mark’s sound is mostly associated with the guitar and the vocal chords. Together they make raucous garage jams about gals who reject them and guys who are way tougher than them.

The dudelingers have finally recorded some new songs in their garage on the trusty old 8-track cassette machine and will be bringing them to you real soon."

"If you think that indie rock preens too much these days, Times New Viking probably sport bruises and scraped knees, and if you think it was all over for Pavement after "Forklift", TNV's lo-fi skree and bounce will certainly shake your love shack." - Pitchfork
Ohio's noise-pop upstarts Times New Viking are easily one of the best of today's lo-fi revival scene, winning fans from the ground-up and praise galore for beautifully their brash, creative, loud lo-fi indie pop punk.
Their recent album, Dancer Enquired, out now on Popfrenzy records, was recorded with the help of help of Adam Smith and Dustin White and represents all that is Times New Viking: it is loud and brash, with mammoth guitars, all throughout nurturing both beauty and authenticity.
Times New Viking are Adam Elliott, Beth Murphy, and Jared Phillips and theyre touring Australia for the first time this August.

Velociraptor "Drunken Knife Fights Ensue" East Coast Tour

This September, Brisbane 12 piece garage pop revivalists Velociraptor will draw straws for the middle seat of the tour van, and hit the road for an epic lineup of east coast shows.

More vintage street gang than band, Velociraptor are known largely for their inability to contain their onstage antics to the actual stage, and their incredibly catchy garage pop gems they deliver on the back of an orchestra of guitars and gang vocals.

Since the release of their debut 7", highlight tracks Hey Suzanne and Sleep with the Fishes have both received heavy airplay on national radio as did latest single In the Springtime when it made high rotation on Triple J.

Live, the band has played alongside the likes of You Am I, Little Red, Regurgitator, Shout Out Louds, Neon Indian, John Steel Singers, Violent Soho, Die Die Die at some of Queensland's best events, and most recently performed main support on the QLD leg of Ghostwood's national tour.

With a brand new EP in the works, this will be Velociraptor’s one and only tour this year, and your last chance to catch them before festival season begins.

MOON DUO
Formed in San Francisco in 2009 by Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnson and his partner, Sanae Yamada, Moon Duo’s first two critically acclaimed EPs, Killing Time (2009) and Escape (2010), fused the futuristic pylon hum and transistor reverb of Suicide or Silver Apples with the heat-haze fuzz of American rock ‘n’ roll to create tracks of blistering, 12-cylinder space rock. Now their debut album Mazes, recorded in San Francisco and mixed in Berlin during 2010 as the band prepared to move to the mountains of Colorado, explores a far broader, lighter, sound.

That’s most clear on the dreamy organ and skipping riff of the title track, which recalls the Velvet Underground, or the handclaps and swinging organ bloops over the potent shredding and guttural riff delivered by Johnson in When You Cut: “He is an incredible guitar player,” enthuses Yamada, “He is one of those musicians who has the ability to elicit a guttural, corporeal response in the listener.” Throughout, Mazes is the sound of Moon Duo carving out their own identity, looking to the horizon, and moving forward.

Ripley says that, as a guitarist and songwriter, delineating between Moon Duo and Wooden Shijps “happens naturally. I focus on one project at a time, and the way the two bands operate is very different. And there are certain limitations that Moon Duo is forced to accept, not having a drummer for example, and I really like that. I like the creative challenge of working with limitations. Having done so much home recording cultivates that. Working with one other person is much different from working with four.”

“We wanted to do something in a more ‘rock 'n' roll band’ style, something a bit fuller than our previous recordings.” In terms of recording this meant that Moon Duo “used more tracks on this record, in order to get a denser, layered sound to make this our ‘rock band’ record. I grew up a huge Stones fan, so I've always liked that dense sound, with multiple guitar tracks, percussion, piano, organ - anything you can squeeze into the mix.”

This meant a vastly different recording process to Moon Duo’s first two EPs, which were recorded fast and at home. Mazes was a more drawn-out process, involving proper recording studios for the first time including the trip to Berlin to mix and re-record certain parts and the track ‘Run Around’. “The working title was Die Blumen [the flowers], so going into the mix sessions we kind of felt like it was becoming our ‘Berlin record’, but in the end it retained the stamp of San Francisco and we liked Mazes title better anyway.” And ultimately, Mazes is a definably American record, recorded against the backdrop of the Johnson and Yamada’s move from the Californian coast to the heights of Colorado. “I think a lot of our music has something to do with the mythology of the road,” muses Moon Duo’s Sanae Yamada. And if Mazes is a quest, a journey through American landscape and music, Johnson concludes that its key is “finding one's place in the world; moving forward, and the different paths one takes moving through life, trying to reach various goals, literally moving; love; pain; change. Or just getting by, and making sense of things”.

"A terrific blend of power and ambience, Soft Crash is a strong album that -- despite the above comparisons -- lies just beyond most easy landmarks. Each song hits a wide variety of touchpoints and times, such that the album feels like it could have been made 30 years ago. In that sense, it’s somewhat out of time.
It’s early in the year, but I’ll be very surprised at the end of it if Soft Crash isn’t near the top of my most-played albums of 2010."

- Dusted

"With two LPs and scattered singles of sparse, semi-creepy basement-bred pop, Orland, Calif.'s Nothing People tap into a new, more anxious vein on their latest single. Something's different here, but it's hard to pick out what: Maybe it's the way the vocals come barking through layers of delay, or maybe it's the squeals of feedback layered beneath the laid-back, almost glammy groove at the heart of the track, but all these elements congeal into something that feels insistent and surging despite its relatively languid tempo. Even as the vocals get more frantic and the guitars start to spill over from one-note insinuations to daggers of distortion, it still feels like the real storm has yet to come. You hear a shouted "Look what I've done," and you believe it's probably something serious-- it hits the right, ominous notes, but "Enemy With an Invitation" gets its tension from holding back."

As the harsh winter is drawing to an end and the restless youth of Brisbane are stirring from hibernation in search of casual sex, and surplus alcohol to replenish their weakened bodies, Happy Endings is there to nurse them back to health. Starting in August, Happy Endings will be hosting a monthly party at Woodland Bar to celebrate the changing of the seasons by showcasing the best local and interstate bands the country has to offer. The first of the series kicks off on August 13 with a Jungle-themed soiree/fundraiser for Melbourne outfit Love Connection who will be showcasing at CMJ in New York in November and supported by local favourites Tiny Migrants and Tiger Beams. September will be huge with garage pop revivalists Velociraptor launching their ‘Drunken Knife Fights Ensue’ east coast tour supported by the all-girl rock quintet, the Madisons and Gold Coast garage rockers Dolphins on September 3rd, followed by another huge night on the 24th which sees Sydneysiders Megastick Fanfare and local experimental poppers Oh Ye Denver Birds come together for a huge double header. set to encapsulate a more diverse sound while still providing the indie garage rock anthems & dynamic live show through which Black Mustang

A string of tour dates will see Black Mustang traverse the East Coast, adding more tour dates as the months progress. The band is excited to be kicking off the tour with their Brisbane date, starting in traditional style with a hectic night of rock and roll.

Lenox Heads, Lismore, Maitland, Sydney, Melbourne & many more to be confirmed.

Black Mustang don’t need an introduction to rock audiences, they’ve already earned their stripes and
acclaim in the Oz rock genre. Having burst onto the Brisbane live scene in 2004, Black Mustang have
played and toured relentlessly covering all corners of Australia while earning a
reputation as Brisbane’s own garage rock stalwarts. Developing their dynamic live

Deep Blue Sea” in 2008.

Black Mustang went on to open shows for critically acclaimed Australian acts like
The Angels, Lime Spiders, The Stems, Six Ft Hick, Tame Impala, British India, 67

Popfrenzy and Happy Endings are extremely excited to announce the release of the new album ‘Goodbye Bread’ by San Francisco’s TY SEGALL on June 24, 2011 PLUS his debut tour of Australia this July!

For the last six years, Ty has made a name for himself cranking out the kind of rowdy ear-splitting, lo-fi garage punk rock that makes the White Stripes sound like something you’d buy for Grandma. At just 23 years old, the prolific wunderkind has already made nine albums including four solo albums since 2008 and three with former band The Epsilons. Plus he’s released with fellow San Fran neo-psych garage mainstays and tour mates Thee Oh Sees and still finds time to be a sometime member of Sic Alps.

Ty Segall

San Francisco psych wunderkind Ty Segall continues a tireless musical assault on ears and minds and is touring Australia for the first time this July.
On the heels of two critically acclaimed solo albums, Segall holed up in a basement studio with Mike Donovan of the SicAlps in late 2009 and early 2010 to come up with his latest record Melted. It's a carefree yet precise balance of acoustic and electric elements. Distorted echo and thunder mix together with enough clean guitar lines and addictive choruses to deliver an album that recalls the '60s without sounding like anything created during that decade. Time melts away, vision melts away, minds melt away. Get Melted!
"Ty Segall's short, sharp songs peal out of the garage without raising the doors, sending 1960s rock riffs crashing through splintered, smart-ass lo-fi buzz." - Pitchfork

FLAVOURS OF SKUZZ MOVES VENUES, CHANGES TIMES/BANDS SLIGHTLY

Flavours of Skuzz, the finest collection of nogoodniks, drop outs, glue sniffers and gentlemen sailors ever assembled in the history of Queensland has had to MOVE VENUES.

Due to a cliched but nonetheless accurate 'set of unforseen circumstances', the event could no longer go ahead as planned at the Jubilee Hotel. Instead it will now be taking place in the convivial surrounds of Woodland Bar in Coniston Lane, Fortitude Valley. An extra room has been made available so that all three stages can go ahead as planned, with only minor changes to the line up. The event will now be running from 4pm on Saturday the 9th of July until 3am the following morning - that's eleven hours of hectic garage rock madness.

The organizers would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the bands who are no longer performing at the event and to anyone else who has been inconvenienced by this change of plans - we will make it up to you somehow! However, we are super excited about the new venue and we're pretty sure FLAVOURS OF SKUZZ is going to go off like the proverbial fart in bottle/frog in sock/Cumbian taxi driver.

The final line up is: Hoss (VIC, ex GOD), HITS, The Vee Bees (NSW), The Boondall Boys (ex Onyas), Dick Nasty, Slug Guts, Blank Realm, Velociraptor, Straight Arrows (NSW), The Meatbeaters (SA), Jonny Romeo (NSW), Brat Farrar (VIC), Undead Apes, Feathers, Lobster Prophet, Pastel Blaze, The Royal Family, Keep On Dancin's, The Busymen, The Gooch Palms (NSW), The Chokes, Main Street Brats, The Narwhals and Gravel Samwidge. DJ Wolvie Trash will also be spinning skuzzy nuggets between bands.

However numbers are now somewhat limited and tickets are sure to sell out fast so to ensure your place head to www.oztix.com.au now!

THIS FRIDAY NITE AT WOODLAND

Hi. Remember us?

Born out of the ashes of The Depot, Common People existed upstairs at Rosie's as a haven for indie club kids left without a place to hang out, make out and dance on. Misfits and the dazed and confused would stumble up the stairs every weekend from 2007 to 2009 to hear electro, indie, hip hop and trash tunes churned out mainly by bonafide lowlifes D.Black and Polar Bear.

Friendships were made and bridges burnt every weekend under the low ceiling of the club for over 2 years, until the influx of fashion punks and fringe warriors downstairs meant that Common People could no longer co-exist at the tiny CBD venue without developing some bad tatts and raging alcoholism. Unwilling to further disrespect the temples of their failing bodies, D.Black and Polar Bear packed up their oxygen tanks and catheters and moved on, ending Common People's reign as the smallest and dodgiest indie club Brisbane has ever seen.

Yet now, 2 years later, by strangely popular demand, Common People is returning for one night only under the timber arches of Woodland - the attraction of a high ceiling too much for Polar Bear to pass up. Joined by CP and Depot/Guilty Pleasures DJs Ninja Rock and Deftone, Common People wants you to party like the late years of the last decade in the most tenuous nostalgia trip ever conceived.

It'll be loud, it'll be messy, the DJs will probably fuck up at least a few times and many requests will be politely listened to, then ignored. It'll be just like old times - how can you pass that up?

The Common People reunion takes place at Woodland on Friday June 17th from 9pm, with DJs D.Black, Polar Bear, Ninja Rock and Deftone throwing hits, misses and more into the mix.

ONE TIME ONLY.

SATURDAY 14TH MAY
Re:Enactment 'Sport' Album Launch!

It's finally here! Sure, it's taken a while. But you know we've been good for it. It might feel like your nemesis from school giving you your tuckshop money back at the 10 year reunion. But this is more like...well that, a heartfelt apology for the delay, and a sultry glare of conviction that this album is the fucking shiz.

It's been mixed by Magoo (Regurgitator, Art vs Science) and Burke Reid (The Drones, Gerling). And it features guest appearances by Jay Whalley (Frenzal Rhomb) James T Laneous (Laneous and The Family Yah) and Shem Allen (Skinny Jean) and Jemma Hicks.

'Sport' is our debut album. We want you to have it first. You are our family. You can't choose your family but you can choose to be very excited about seeing Sydney's incredible 'No Art' return to Brisbane. Playing as well, The Rational Academy, whom after having already released an ocean of quality records are absolutely peaking with some the best new songs we've heard this year.

Then there's Lofly's finest - Toy Balloon DJ's, if you've ever been to a Hangar where Coops is on duty and you've wondered why it's all of a sudden sunrise and you still don't want to leave chances are it's his fault. All time, good time, times!

We're all going to be there and we want all of you to be there. This show is going to be the fucking tops! bam.

Blackwater Fever

In Stereo, the 2nd full length from Australian two piece The Blackwater Fever. Recorded at Brisbane’s newly established Borough Studios. Co-produced with artist Skritch (Mary Trembles, Beast Of Bourbon, Tex Perkins’ Dark Horses)

In Stereo is a blend of rock n’ roll, blues and soul. Written with honesty, performed with intensity and vigor. Ignoring all cool kid trends and hipster sounds. The Blackwater Fever have produced a potent 2nd album.

“SWEET MISERY IS THAT RAREST OF THINGS: A TOUGH, PASSIONATE GARAGE BLUES ALBUM THAT IS SATISFYING FROM BEGINNING TO END EVEN AFTER THE UMPTEENTH LISTEN.” – Tsunami Mag
Their dark debut ‘Sweet Misery’ received continuous praise from the Australian music press. There was airplay and interviews on JJJ, RRR, FBI, RTR, ABC and 4ZZZ. It was a feature album on PBS radio and made waves across to US college radio. HBO featured tracks, reaching over 38 million US viewers, used for their summer Cinemax campaign … and oh yeah it was voted best Australian release on Polish radio 2009! It is released in Australia, Europe and Japan.

“REFRESHINGLY BLEAK, MYSTERIOUSLY ACCOMPLISHED AND COMFORTABLY CONFIDENT” – MAG (JB HI-FI)
A harrowing growl, a tortured electric guitar and the rhythmic stomp of an unrelenting drum kit. If you close your eyes you can almost smell the swamp and feel the moonlight on your face. It’s hard to believe such an atmospheric, blues-heavy sound comes from just two guys. Breaking your heart one minute only to pick you up with an irresistible rocker the next, this Australian duo are a live experience not to be missed.

“DARK RIVER OF VITRIOLIC ROCK’N’ROLL” – Time Off
TBWF have shared the stage with internationalists The Black Keys, Jon Spencer, Datsuns, Black Diamond Heavies & Bob Log III plus shows and tours with home grown acts Birds Of Tokyo, Calling All Cars, Tame Impala, Mia Dyson, The Mess Hall, The Vasco Era, The Kill Devil Hills, Yves Klein Blue, Youth Group and The Fumes to strong music press reviews.
With their hands well and truly dirty laying the foundations of a 3rd album already. TBWF seem hell bent on making their mark on the Australian and international music scene.
In Stereo in stores late March 2011 through Plus One Records

Aa bio:

Brooklyn’s Aa (say 'Big A little a') have been honing their unique blend of intensely stylized DIY maximalism in the lofts and clubs of New York since 2002. The component parts - multiple drum sets, a tangle of synthesizers and samplers, dudes shouting - are simple enough, yet the experience is an utterly unique and giddily engaging gasp of fresh air; a densely imagined, obsessively structured, hyperactive shoplifting spree through the polyrhythmic post-post-punk digital landscape. Earth-shakingly organic beats, squawking, alien samples and group chant-hooks crash headfirst into blissed-out electronic rave-ups - everybody moves, everybody sweats.

"Not just noise, not just drums, but something that reaches ecstatic, bombastic heights." Pitchfork

"An art-punk party-starting re-invention of the hippie drum circle." Village Voice

"Passionately clamorous local experimenters." New York Times

To co-incide with the release of ‘mAate’, Aa are in Australia for the first time ever in late April, for a run of amazing shows:

Friday

Slug Guts have just came back from SXSW and are launching their new LP on Friday. Special guests EAT SKULL (USA) are on the bill too.
Tickets online HERE or OZTIX outlets and THE OUTPOST!!

Aa (big A little a) [USA] and Rat vs Possum bring vowels and mammals to Woodland, May 5

Percussion-heavy art-punk/experimental electronic Brooklynites Aa (usually pronounced "big A, little a") are making their Australian debut on a tour with Melbourne's brilliant tribal-psych youngsters Rat vs Possum. One that pulls into Woodland on Thursday May 5!

Already given Thurston Moore's seal of approval ("they club out bite-sized hunks of neo-no, new-wave-electro-murk, disco-noise readymades, French duck calls and a buncha other stuff. And it sounds quite pleasing!") Aa have new record - mAate - out on Australian label Sensory Projects (a compilation of 2009's gAame album plus the Glossy 12" and unreleased tracks), and it's a slice of polyrhythmic post-post-punk digital heaven. They are, quite frankly, no kidding guys ... amazing.

Rat vs Possum - also playing this weekend at the Ric's Big Backyard Festival (although we all know you'll be at Woodland for The Belligerents, natch) - have been going from strength to strength since last year's Daughter Of Sunshine release, introducing audiences across the country to their sunny psych-pop tribalism, likened to a Brooklyn loft party taking place in a zoo. They're taking time out from recording a new album for this tour, so make sure you come check out their brand new sounds.

Doors at the early time of 8pm for this one, with ticket details TBC. Add it to your Google calendar now!

EAT SKULL (Portland, USA) & Slug Guts get gory at Woodland, April 8

Portland scuzz-pop act Eat Skull are joining forces with Brisbane swamp-rock overlords Slug Guts for a night of contorted electric insanity at Woodland on Friday April 8.

Known for their lo-fi classics Sick To Death and Wild And Inside, and a handful of super-sharp (and rare) 7-inches, Eat Skull combine Flying Nun-style art-pop with feedback, grit and punk attitude. Hooks galore, provided your ears can withstand the onslaught. They are, if we can allow ourselves a moment of real honesty here, completely unmissable.

Slug Guts need no introduction, having been regulars on the Woodland stage. Except of course this time they're playing off the back of a triumphant US tour, where they were seen partying with Tyler The Creator at SXSW (no shit). Plus they have an album out - Howlin' Gang - on amazing New York label Sacred Bones. And with song titles like Spring Hill Lair, you know this is the best thing to wash up on Brisbane's riverbanks since long before the floods. It's loud, it's mean and it's dirty. As Secret Birds man D.Black says, "those guys are animals".

Tickets are $15+bf pre-sale or $18 on the door. The night starts at 8.30pm. Be early!
