Percussion-heavy art-punk/experimental electronic Brooklynites Aa (usually pronounced "big A, little a") are making their Australian debut on a tour with Melbourne's brilliant tribal-psych youngsters Rat vs Possum. One that pulls into Woodland on Thursday May 5!
Already given Thurston Moore's seal of approval ("they club out bite-sized hunks of neo-no, new-wave-electro-murk, disco-noise readymades, French duck calls and a buncha other stuff. And it sounds quite pleasing!") Aa have new record - mAate - out on Australian label Sensory Projects (a compilation of 2009's gAame album plus the Glossy 12" and unreleased tracks), and it's a slice of polyrhythmic post-post-punk digital heaven. They are, quite frankly, no kidding guys ... amazing.
Rat vs Possum - also playing this weekend at the Ric's Big Backyard Festival (although we all know you'll be at Woodland for The Belligerents, natch) - have been going from strength to strength since last year's Daughter Of Sunshine release, introducing audiences across the country to their sunny psych-pop tribalism, likened to a Brooklyn loft party taking place in a zoo. They're taking time out from recording a new album for this tour, so make sure you come check out their brand new sounds.
Doors at the early time of 8pm for this one, with ticket details TBC. Add it to your Google calendar now!
Portland scuzz-pop act Eat Skull are joining forces with Brisbane swamp-rock overlords Slug Guts for a night of contorted electric insanity at Woodland on Friday April 8.
Known for their lo-fi classics Sick To Death and Wild And Inside, and a handful of super-sharp (and rare) 7-inches, Eat Skull combine Flying Nun-style art-pop with feedback, grit and punk attitude. Hooks galore, provided your ears can withstand the onslaught. They are, if we can allow ourselves a moment of real honesty here, completely unmissable.
Slug Guts need no introduction, having been regulars on the Woodland stage. Except of course this time they're playing off the back of a triumphant US tour, where they were seen partying with Tyler The Creator at SXSW (no shit). Plus they have an album out - Howlin' Gang - on amazing New York label Sacred Bones. And with song titles like Spring Hill Lair, you know this is the best thing to wash up on Brisbane's riverbanks since long before the floods. It's loud, it's mean and it's dirty. As Secret Birds man D.Black says, "those guys are animals".
Tickets are $15+bf pre-sale or $18 on the door. The night starts at 8.30pm. Be early!

Once when the Hard-Ons were in Arizona they discovered that one of the guys helping with the loadout after the show was none other than The MC5's bassist, Mike Davis. The band were blubbering heaps and in a joint fit of general unworthiness were horrified that such a figure should be lugging their gear. Davis later wrote to bassist, Ray Ahn saying that he might have been excited to meet a member of the Detroit leather legends but that was nothing to the response he got from his friends when he told them that he had met the Hard-Ons!
Come witness!!!

As most of you know, some of us Woodland peeps went and enjoyed SUMMER VIBES early this year.
Having been to quite a few festivals over the years, I have to say that SUMMER VIBES was one of the best.
Being held at Newcastle, meant it was totally chilled. Amazing bands, cheap Croatian beers, outdoor bbq... enjoyed with about 400 other like minded people!!!
Well it's on again!!!!!

DZ are DZ no more - meet DZ DEATHRAYS! Same band, same members, more syllables.
Taking some time out between appearances at SXSW in Texas and the Great Escape in Brighton, England, DZ DEATHRAYS are making an anticipated stop at Woodland on Friday April 1, launching their brand new EP BRUTAL TAPES (possibly about Betamax from The Mighty Boosh, we don't know...)
The duo have just signed to the very cool I OH YOU label, home to GC garage pop kids Bleeding Knees Club and ex-HOWL-ers Hunting Grounds.
It's going to be a huge year for the duo, so make sure you see them up close in super-loud mode at Woodland. It might be the last time for a while!
Supports TBC, with DJs Polar Bear and Harvey Satan in party mode until late.
Fresh off an east coast tour supporting RATATAT (US), Newcastle's ALPS is heading straight back on the road for a full national tour to promote the release of his fourth full length and twelfth effort total, 'Alps of New South Wails'.
Recorded in bedrooms and artspaces between Dunedin NZ and Newcastle NSW and mastered in Melbourne by Eddy Current Supression Ring's Mikey Young, 'Alps of New South Wails' is out Feburary 11 on Past Futures.
To fill in the gaps on stage, Alps is expanding from a solo act into a four piece band. Band member recruits come from Newcastle band BARE GRILLZ, who since their humble houseshow beginnings in early 2010 have gone on to become Newcastle's best loved band and be name dropped by Polaroids of Androids as "probably the best band in Australia right now". Conveniently, BARE GRILLZ are also taking the opportunity to play supports on all shows, on their first national jaunt.
